Frequently asked questions

Are the questions aligned with the current NCEES specifications?

Yes. The problems follow the current NCEES FE Civil blueprint covering all the major areas — mathematics, statics and dynamics, mechanics of materials, fluid mechanics, structural, geotechnical, transportation, water/environmental, construction, ethics, and engineering economics — so you're practicing exactly what the exam tests.

How should I use the practice exams?

Start with practice problem sets to find your weak spots, then take full-length timed exams to build stamina and pacing. With about 2 minutes 55 seconds per question on the real test, practicing under time pressure is one of the biggest factors in passing.

How long should I study before the exam?

Most candidates do well with a focused study plan over several weeks — a common recommendation is around 12–14 weeks of consistent practice. The earlier you start working through problems, the more time you have to spot weak areas and fix them before test day.

What score do I need to pass?

The FE is reported simply as pass or fail — you won't receive a numerical score, and NCEES does not publish a fixed passing score because it's adjusted for each exam version's difficulty. If you don't pass, NCEES provides a diagnostic report showing where you fell short, which is useful for targeting a retake.

We typically recommend a score of at least 75% in the practice exams to do well on the actual Civil FE.
